This Week at Brookwood

Winter Break is almost upon us, and the Brookwood community continues to buzz with excitement as 2018 nears. Here are some recent highlights from across campus.

There are thousands of children who will spend the holidays without a home of their own. With our help, Wellspring can bring smiles to children and parents who are in its care by decorating and filling holiday stockings (pictured above). In addition to their stocking project, 1st graders also helped sort and tag toys (pictured at right) so they could be properly grouped and displayed at their annual Holiday Store, which receives donations from various drives (including at the nearby fire stations in Essex, Manchester, and Gloucester).

Today, 6th grade students and teachers visited the residents of Rockport High School Apartments and Pigeon Cove Ledges Apartments in the continuation of their year-long community design thinking project centered around the creation of 3D printed assistive devices for seniors. This year’s “ChangeMakers” project, involving the entire 6th grade, represents the third year of a continuing partnership between Brookwood and Harborlight Community Partners in which students form relationships with seniors, engage in “problem finding” with their new friends, collaboratively prototype potential solutions, and iterate ever-improving versions of their original inventions using 3D printing.

Earlier this week, 5th graders (pictured below) were introduced to the World Peace Games, a hands-on political simulation that gives students the opportunity to explore the connectedness of the global community through the lens of the economic, social, and environmental crises and other imminent threats. The goal of the game is to extricate each country from dangerous circumstances and achieve global prosperity with the least amount of military intervention. Nation states and agencies have still yet to be formed and roles distributed, but the Game is underway - and will likely continue into January or February - until world peace is achieved!
